Lash Out! A Luscious Lash Lesson

Hi everyone! My name is Kat and I am a licensed Esthetician and principal makeup artist for Hera Beauty, I am also the make up artist for HauteShots Boudoir Photography! I met Shana over 10 years ago when she first came to visit me for an eyebrow waxing...I have loved hearing about all of her projects over the years but I must say her thrifting is what has caught my eye recently. With her most recent title of Hauteshots spokesmodel I have had the pleasure of working with her and getting to play dress up often. I love experimenting with make up and one of my favorite things to play with are lashes! I always get questions about lashes from fasle lashes to the best mascaras, to how to apply mascara and how to remove it!
Waterproof?  Fibers? Polymers?  Mineral?  The newest formulas all make wonderful claims (Self-curling! Thickening! Conditioning! Lengthening!) due to new ingredients, fancy applicators, and good advertising, and many of them do exactly what they say they will… within reason.  The one thing to remember about any fantastic mascara claims is the one limitation mascara will always have- it’s applied over your own lashes, so if your own lashes are thin and short, there’s only so much a mascara on it’s own can do for you.

Waterproof vs. Washable:
Waterproof mascaras are a necessity for most wedding makeup artists for obvious reasons.  These formulas create a nice, smudge-proof seal that a few tears of joy won’t ruin, unlike regular formulas that run easily with any introduction of liquid.  The downside- these waterproof formulas need to be removed using a makeup remover that can break it down to avoid pulling or breakage of the lashes.  Waterproof mascara can also feel drier and stiffer on the lashes than regular formulas.  Many mascara formulas usually come in both regular and waterproof.
When choosing a formula, whether waterproof or regular, first decide what you want to accomplish- length, thickness, curl, etc.  (Quick tip: I often find that volumizing formulas can be a little heavy. I’ve found that these formulas work fantastic on anyone who has natural curl to their lashes.)   If you’re trying to decide between a drugstore brand versus a department store brand, it really comes down to personal preference.  Many makeup artists, including myself, believe there are formulas for $6 that are just as phenomenal as the formulas that sell for $36.
6 Tips for a great mascara application
  1. If your lashes are straight and need curling, begin your lash routine by taking a lash curler and curling the lashes.  I find that warming the curler with a hair dryer for a couple of seconds warms the metal and helps create a beautiful curl.  Touch the warmed curler on the inside of your wrist to make sure it’s not too hot before using on your eyes.  For the best curl, press the curler together at the base of the lashes for a second, release, and move a few millimeters up and out and squeeze again.  Repeat the press and release process several times until you reach the end of the lashes.  By curling the lashes at the base, middle and top, you will have a pretty, wide-eyed curl instead of a unnatural looking bend.
  2. Starting from the base and outside corner of the eye, sweep the mascara slowly from the bottom all the way to the top.  Some makeup artists recommend wiggling the wand slightly as you work your way up.  This technique works to fully coat the lashes, but I’ve also found that some formulas can clump more if used this way.  It just depends on the formula.
  3. Continue sweeping the mascara from the base to the top of the lashes from the outer corner to the inner corner.  To really define the inner corner lashes, use the smaller end of the mascara wand to reach the finer hairs.  If your wand doesn’t taper, turn the wand vertical and use just the tip of the wand to reach the fine inner eyelashes.
  4. If you want to add a second coat for additional thickness, color, and length, give the mascara 10-30 seconds to dry and reapply.  Some newer polymer formulas that coat or “tube” the lashes (Kiss Me Mascara- Click here for more info!) don’t work in the same way- they recommend reapplying a second coat before the first coat dries.
  5. For the bottom lashes, use the smaller, tapered end of the wand in the same way as the inner lashes.  If you tend to smear or get mascara on the skin easily, place and hold a single piece of tissue under the eye while you apply your mascara or use a damp cotton swab to remove any blobs that occur.
  6. If the mascara is heavy or damp, it may have straightened out the curl- if this is the case, just go back to step one and re-curl after the mascara is fully dry.
Have fun- be fabulous!

Top 5 Drugstore Beauty Bargains

Hi I'm Rachel Bates I am a hairstylist, and partner of Hera Beauty the official glam squad for Haute Shots Boudoir Photography. So excited to be guest blogging for Shana!!!  I met Shana when she became our spokesmodel and like her I am a total bargain shopper...and even when it comes to my products...some of these are even better than the pricey ones!!
Here is my top 5 list for the best beauty bargains!!!
Got2be Glued Hair Spray
I absolutly love this stuff it is some serious hair spray and I use it a few defferent ways, it works great to "set" an updo style so that every curl stays in it's place all night long. I also use it as volumizing hair spray just be sure you hold the can about 12 inches from your head and lighty mist it. My favorite way to use it is as a root volumizer, you section out your hair at the base where you want volume (bump it style) and spray then tease. If you are really wanting some crazy volume pair it with # 2 on the list! You can purchase this pruduct in most drugstores for $5.99
Product Image
Got2be Powderful
I think this is my favorite of the bargain finds! This is a volumizing powder that you sprinkle into sectioned hair at the root and tease for added volume. Just remember when using this product that a little goes a long way. There are a few name brand hair product lines that have volumizing hair powder and in my opinion this brand works just as good for 1/2 the cost. You can purchase this product in most drugstores for $5.99 (and i have even found it in the clearance bin at Walgreens for 99cents before!)
Product Image

Not Your Mothers Beach Babe
This is probably my most used product in the summer months. Beach Babe is a sea salt texturizing spray that you simply mist in your damp hair and then when it dries you have a beautiful beachy wave! This stuff also smells amazing like the beach and coconut. You can find this product at most drugstores for $5.99

Product Image
Not Your Mothers Kinky Moves Curl Defining Hair Cream

This hair cream is a yummy-scented combo that leaves your curls soft and shiny and it smells like grapes! I love this product for my kids because they love the smell and it never leaves the hair crunchy so you don't have to battle tears when combing or brushing the next day. You can purchase this product at most drugstores for $5.99

Product Image
Loreal Ever Pure Sulfate Free Shampoos and Conditioners
Ok with this product I have to be honest with you that in my opinion nothing tops Enjoy sulfate free shampoos and conditioners but that line is very expensive and just like everyone else I cannot afford to purchase expensive hair products all the time, so this product is my best find of the grocery store aisle shampoos and conditioners. It will leave your hair soft and silky and being sulfate free is very healthy for your hair. Another plus is this product is in every drug store and grocery store and I quite often see it on sale at various places. It generally costs $5.99 each (unless you find a sale!)
So there you have it! You don't have to empty your bank account on expensive hair styling products to have rocking style...does this mean I can be a member of Thrifters Anonymous now? Thank you guys! and let me know what some of your favorite bargain products are!!!

Bright Tights & Fall Finds

102512_1
Hi everyone! I'm Chrissi from over at Fiery Finish, and I'm so excited to be guest blogging here on ColorBlind! I've been a serious thrifter for the past 15 years and recently opened up a vintage clothing and accessories shop on Etsy called Fiery Finish Vintage. Hey, it gives me an excuse to go thrift shopping every week. Like I need to pretend like I need an excuse...this is the home of Thrifters Anonymous!

I thought it would be fun to show you some of my favorite fall thrifting finds. Now fall is the one season of the year when I find myself gravitating toward the color brown. There's just something about the cooling weather and changing light that just calls out for earth tones! If you've ever been to my blog, you'll know that I can't just put together some earthy colors and call it a day. There must be some bright tights to finish the whole look!

What would I do during the fall months without my bright tights? I'd rather not have to answer that question...

I found this vintage secretary dress at Buffalo Exchange about six years ago and I get so excited to bust it out every autumn. There's just something about the cut and the tiny polka dots that make it a perfect layering base. Here I decided to keep it simple with a jade green snakeskin belt I picked up at Goodwill this week ($2.99!) and my trusty mustard tights. The shoes were a clearance find at Payless last summer and really seem to go with just about everything!
For my second look, I decided to keep it a little more casual. Flat brown boots are an absolute fall basic for me and I scored these beauties at Beacon's Closet in Brooklyn a few years ago. They've been through one resoling and are still looking great! My brown vintage top and J. Crew wool cardigan were both Goodwill finds, and the cute plaid H&M shorts are from Buffalo Exchange. And what could give this outfit a little extra pizzaz better than these burnt orange tights?

My rule for buying new clothes is to always check the thrift stores and second hand shops first. With just a little extra effort you can save so much money, and with all that saved money you can buy more clothes! Or an amazing dinner out! Or go to the movies! The possibilities are endless...

Love ,
Chrissi

After watching many fashion hauls on YouTube I wanted to show girls they don't have to spend a bunch of $$ to still be fashionable and wear designer duds...I love that Thrifters Anonymous exists...and I am most certainly a member! haha
